In recent days, many people go to the hospital with complaints of vomiting and diarrhea. Gastrointestinal infections affect adults as well as children.
Due to the hot weather and the rapid deterioration of food, there is an increase in gastroenteritis, i.e. gastrointestinal infections, especially these days. This can be dangerous, especially for children under the age of 5 and people over the age of 60.
Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Veysel Balcı said, “When the weather is hot, food spoils quickly. Foods that are kept outside for a long time deteriorate when chicken, cream, dairy products are left outside for a long time. In hot weather, the waters become infected quickly,” he said.
Attention should be paid to fruits and vegetables eaten outside
It is important to wash raw vegetables and fruits with clean water. Balcı says that you should also be careful when eating out:
“Where you eat the foods you eat from outside is also very important. Hygiene is very important, if food can be consumed in a place where hygiene is not followed, then the risk of disease is higher.”
Warning to picnic goers
Balcı said, “When we go on a picnic, we think that the spring waters are very clean. It carries a risk of infection, other than that, it may contain heavy metals because they are not controlled, we can be exposed not only as a disease, but also arsenic poisoning, mercury poisoning, lead poisoning,” he said.
In children and the elderly, it is recommended to apply to the emergency department in cases of prolonged vomiting and diarrhea.
