Shot Sage Blue Marilyn’ was made by the American painter Andy Warhol, the pioneer of the pop art movement, in 1963, two years after Marilyn Monroe’s death.
While making the painting, the artist was based on a photograph taken by Monroe in 1953 for the promotion of the movie “Niagara”. The portrait has been put up for auction at Christie’s in New York. The work found buyers for $170 million. It cost the buyer $195 million with taxes and charges.
The portrait became the highest-priced American work among “20th-century works.” Among the works sold through auction, it was recorded as “the second most expensive work of all time”.

The buyer was announced to be Larry Gagosian, owner of a chain of art galleries. The most expensive work in the world is still the famous Italian painter of the Renaissance period, Leonardo da Vinci’s painting “Salvator Mundi”, which depicts Jesus Christ. The final sale value of the painting was $450 million.
